I still haven't seen anything to suggest Gutherson will be much more than a good solid player. Would I prefer we kept him in an ideal world ???yeah probably. Is it likely to be the biggest mistake we make in recruitment ??? I highly doubt it.

It was a good performance from Gutho. I noticed in the after match interview he said he hadn't played 5/8 since u13s or u14s. The media reports today have now picked that up and run with it. He must have forgotten the bunch of games he played at 5/8 for our reggies team a couple of years ago!

I took that as saying he hadn't played since 13/14, as in 2013/2014.

But I was getting kids dressed so not fully concentrating on an eels game

Personally I'd like the recruiters to come out and explain why they let a contracted local junior with substantial talent, walk away or get pushed. As Pauline Hanson would say 'please explain'. One of the most inept decisions I've come across.

They bought several players in the off season Brooke, not just Walker. No reason they couldnt have both Walker and Gutherson, if they had not also brought in some lesser lights who are certainly not as talented as either. No, it was just plain dumb, and whoever made the decision needs to explain. They certainly should be trying to get him back for 2018.

To see a junior star who's career we have all watched, lighting it up at Parra is just not right.
He needs to be brought back. A backline with Turbo, Gutho, Walks,Taufua, that I like.

Whilst I liked him as a player along with you guys I think it's been said many times he left because he wanted to go to a team where he could play fullback (pretty sure he said that somewhere.) The understanding is Manly couldn't offer him that, Eels did.

They released him because he was willing to do to secure a first grade birth, whilst unfortunately plodders on big $$$$$ like Mateo & Burgess refused to leave!!

It's been explained here many times how that played out. At the time it was a rational decision by both the club and Gutho. He was released because he wanted a better shot at first grade than he'd get at Manly.

Remember, he played only 5 games for Manly over 3 seasons, was coming back from a major knee op, and knew that aside from the established stars who were keeping him out of top grade, Tom T was also now in the mix.

And by the way, his signing for the Eels was announced on 3 November - that was before Walker had even been given his show cause notice by the Bunnies.

However I agree he looked great at 5/8.

I remember telling the boys at work that were hassling me last year about our aging roster that we had a young gun in the likes of Gutho that was just waiting to get a shot at first grade. Junior Kangaroo. Junior SOO captain and born and bred northern beaches.
It is very ****e to see him run around in the terrible jersey.
Maybe he can do a Lussick though and return one day.

Gutherson went ok at 5/8 but he was playing against some shoddy defense and it is only one game. he is not our long term solution at 5/8 and I have yet to see him prove himself at full back - his preferred position (but we have Tom who is a thousand times the player!)

Seen him play at wing and center and just goes ok, nothing better than we have now. If we had him on the books i dont see him playing first grade unless an injury to a couple of players occurred.

We need to sign a specialist center and winger. Next year it will be matai and walker in the centers and willame as cover. Hopefully we can purchase another specialist center and winger - gutherson isn't that player

If he was with Manly today the variables are legion. He could be full back and Tom in the centre. He could be centre. He could be 5/8. He could be on the wing. He's that versatile. Imagine a backline like DCE, Lyon, Taufua, Walker, Tom T, Williame, Gutherson...or Gutherson centre, Tom T full back. That's a top line backline, as good as any in the comp. Like Tom I see Gutherson as future star quality.

And he also wanted to play fullback. He requested a release because he figured that would be Tom T's position.

A couple of days ago in an article from NRL.com he had this to say "We've got a few good fullbacks there....but if I'm here for the long term that would be my number one [choice]".

So he still thinks fullback is his position.

On the verge of state of origin?? Are you kidding me? He was moved on so we could sign Walker and Marty which was 100% the right call!

And do I want gutherson in the back line some where - only maybe on the wing if we are desperate due to injuries. Hes too slow and weak for a centre, not strong enough ball carrier to be a meat eater winger and gets caught out of position and can't defend. Do I want him at 5/8, hell no. I want another genuine organizer to help DCE. We know what happens when DCE has to do everything himself.

To say he is on verge of SOO is ridiculous! We dont need him. We need a specialist center and 5/8 and winger. Gutho is neither any of them and would get mauled in the centers
