John Hopoate Blocked By The NRL

To be honest I think it was a poor decision by the club but having said that the NRL have poor form in who the let & don't let clubs employ. Same goes with suspensions etc. Manly always seem to be the trial run. The bench mark is set but then not applied elsewhere. Gives me the sheites.

Just turned onto that talk sport show and they were mid interview. I wondered who the dumb thug was that they were talking to.
You guessed it.
I wouldn't want him coaching my kids. I cannot imagine what he could do to further them as players or humans.

I wouldn't have picked Hoppa either based on appearances. And Jack Gibson also struggled with grammar, struggled to put two words together, and was in my mind undoubtedly the coach of his generation - perhaps of all time.

It is a different conversation who the Penns should have chosen as coach. Greenberg and co have turned this particular conversation into whether Manly or the NRL select our coaching staff.

What amazes me most is the suggestion that Hopoate is not suitable because of his behaviour in at Sydney Casino. Heaven help us. There have been many at the top of the coaching group which are well known to have been involved in questionable gambling issues and associations, some respected as the best coaches of the League in the past. As I said, judge Hopoate on his credentials handling children, not all these other issues of which a significant proportion of past coaches would come under far worse scrutiny.

dead silence from the other clubs? People that live in glass houses etc, maybe.

No Comment < privately lmao >

Alright, sheeeessssh, if it makes you feel better, we are renowned for scandals & handling hot potatoes , too.

On a more positive note, this could be an excellent opportunity for Levick, William & John to share champagne toasted picnics, family bonding & camp-outs at the Supreme Court.

I heard him on the radio the other day saying he has no idea why he is not allowed into the Casino. He has been there only 4 times with his family for a birthday party and to eat at the all you can eat restaurant. And his only links to criminals are to people like Craig Field who have spent time in jail.

Hoppa is saying he never goes to the Casino (except as above^), so apparently it's not even for his behaviour in the Casino. It's for pure imaginings of how he might behave if he decided to go there. And he says they won't tell him why.

When people have extreme fears for things which haven't happened, and which might never happen, we call that mental illness.

Memory failure & lapses in memory (e.g. passing out, unconsciousness) . Not good.

Hopefully, it a simple misunderstanding a good suit, deoderant & flossing will fix. No thongs. No expletives. No gold teeth. No air swings. No dressing GANSTA. If that doesn't work - call Levick.

There is some guideline about barring organised crime figures and bikies from the casino. The cop's statement insinuated that Hoppa is associated with organised crime figures and should therefore be on the casino banned list.

As far as I can tell from info in the "public domain" Hoppa has worked security in the cross and therefore may have links to figures there.

It really seems to me that an injustice has been done to Hoppa based on unsubstantiated innuendo.

Very well stated. That explanation fits the situation like a glove, or ... er ... a shoe, Shoe1.

What is most concerning about all this is that there is no opportunity for any remote sense of natural justice. Hoppa cannot respond, there's no appeal, he can't even be told. And it has been seemingly randomly extended to his workplace - the footy field.

People by their very nature are biased and easily jump to incorrect conclusions. This includes the police. In the absence of checks and balances, great injustices can be done. Police States arise in the absence of these checks and balances.

And the NRL muppets appear to have jumped to very extreme conclusions, extreme threats, and extreme actions outside of their powers, on the basis of what may have as little substance as Chinese whispers.

This is how the Gestapo operated.

Talkin' Sport were somewhat non-committal whether Hoppa should be coaching, although you got the feeling that they wouldn't want him as mentor for 16-18yo's.

Their reasoning on the interview with him was all to do with due process etc.

Paraphrasing - and I was in the car so from memory.

If you believe Hoppa, Manly offered him the gig which has to be ratified by the powers that be. He attended an NRL sanctioned training course invite only - at a cost of $400 back in November(??) which ran for five days.

Now he is deemed as not a fit person to coach at Junior Rep level.

Ball and Flegg are under the jurisdiction of the NSWRL not the NRL.
The NSWRL have deemed him fit to coach.
The NRL have said "no, that's it, no right of appeal, we don't have to tell you why, etc, etc"
Hoppa named someone that said he made the rule by which he is deemed unfit.
So he's got no right of appeal as tne NRL says no but the governing body that runs Junior Reps say he's okay.
Tunksie was more or less trying to say - show the parties involved, Hoppa, NSWRL and MWSE the evidence as to why he's deemed not fit - a little bit of transparency would clear all this up one way or another.
He mentioned that it may be that the NSWRL and the NRL don't get on so it may have a small role to play in the saga.

I'm with the boys on this, the NRL need to get their house in order.
If there's due cause, lay the cards on the table so everyone knows what the guidelines are.

SBW has weighed into the debate now

Sonny Bill Williams tells NRL to leave John Hopoate alone

Sonny Bill Williams has urged the NRL to allow John Hopoate to continue his coaching career.

The game's governing body and the controversial rugby league figure appear on a collision course over Hopoate's role as coach of Manly's SG Ball side.

However, two-time premiership winner Williams believes Hopoate has paid for his previous indiscretions and should be allowed to mentor the NRL's rising stars.

"Let the past be the past, Seems like 'Hoppa' wants to use it in a positive way and we need more islander coaches coming through the grades." Williams wrote on Twitter.

Williams has turned around his public image since emerging as one of the NRL's most reviled figures when he walked out on Canterbury in 2008.

His positive influence on younger players during his return to the NRL with Sydney Roosters in 2013 and 2014 is credited as a significant factor in the club's 13th premiership success.

The NRL insist that Hopoate is not a "fit and proper person" to be heading up the Sea Eagles' elite under-18 side.

But the most suspended player in the history of the NRL has vowed to fight any ban.

Hopoate has said he hasn't been stood down from his coaching role with Manly, however he did not lead the Sea Eagles' SG Ball side's training session on Tuesday.

The former representative winger has vowed to take any sanction to the NSW Supreme Court, claiming it's the NSWRL that has jurisdiction over the SG Ball competition not the NRL.

It is the NSWRL's position that Hopoate has met the various criteria to qualify as a coach at a junior level.

The matter could come to a head when Manly host Canberra in the third round of the SG Ball competition at Brookvale Oval on Saturday.
