'It is just an outrage': Sea Eagles' oval under scrutiny

The naming rights of Manly Sea Eagles’ Lottoland stadium would come under pressure under a proposal to be considered by Northern Beaches Council on Tuesday night.

The council is set to consider an anti-gambling strategy, aimed primarily at reducing the harm from poker machines.

But the ability for local governments to control the number and use of poker machines within their area is limited under state law.

The council’s “harm minimisation strategy”, therefore, proposes that the council demonstrate “community leadership through not allowing gambling related advertising on its buildings”.

“This will impact assets such as Brookvale Oval,” the strategy says.

Pat Daley, a Liberal councillor who has pushed the anti-gambling strategy along with Greens councillor Natalie Warren, said the strategy would “absolutely” look at the naming of the stadium.

“I think it is just an outrage … we are calling on council to look at that,” said Cr Daley, who added he would move that the gambling strategy be subject to a two-month consultation.

When the Sea Eagles, who lease the stadium from Northern Beaches Council, signalled their intention to sign a naming rights deal with Lottoland, the then administrator of the council Dick Persson said he was powerless to stop the deal.

“I expressed my view to the Sea Eagles that I didn’t think it was a good name, unfortunately the previous council did not include any veto right over the naming rights and I don’t have the ability to influence it apart from expressing opinion,” Mr Persson said in February 2017.

It is unclear what the direct impact of the anti-gambling policy would be. The mayor, Michael Regan, said if the policy was adopted he would imagine current agreements would continue but new licences would not permit such terms.

Another proposal before the council is to consider restricting or banning poker machines on council-owned properties leased to other organisations, through conditions in the lease.

Such a policy could however have a major financial impact on community clubs – such as golf or bowling clubs – and therefore the recommendation to council is to include such clauses where appropriate.

The strategy is in response to a council motion in November, endorsed 10-3, to call on the state government to cap poker machine licences in the area, and also to devise a council-led harm ministration strategy.

Under the Gaming Machines Act 2001, councils are, in effect, prevented from using planning powers to restrict or curb poker machines in their area.

The Herald has requested comment from the Sea Eagles.

Simple Northern Beaches council can name the ground whatever they like as long as they take over the payments that Lottoland give us each year

If not then STFU

Nanny state. A sign on a stadium is an "outrage" but that Meriton monstrosity they are building in Dee Why is totally fine...

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me the definition of "coming soon".
I ask, because the large screen TV/scoreboard at Brookie has been "coming soon" since the start of the season.

LOTTOLAND will consider a High Court challenge if legislation to ban betting on overseas lotteries passes federal parliament.

The Gibraltar-based company is fighting for survival in Australia after the Turnbull Government announced plans to ban its product, known as “synthetic lotteries”.

“With 700,000 customers in Australia, we’re going to continue to fight this,” Lottoland chief executive Luke Brill told reporters in Canberra on Monday.

Legislation banning Lottoland’s business model is due to be debated in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

The government says it acted in response to community concern gambling on overseas lotteries is undermining a longstanding acceptance of traditional lotteries.

Mr Brill said the ban was motivated by a $5 million “smear” campaign launched by Tatts Group owner Tabcorp to sink Lottoland.

“What you’re seeing from Tatts and Tabcorp at the moment is them acting like a monopoly,” he said.

Mr Brill says Lottoland is being singled out despite being a fully regulated and compliant “disrupter” in the lottery sector.

Victorian Association for Newsagents general manager Chris Samartzis and Newsagents Association of NSW and ACT chief Ian Booth both support Lottoland. They say the legislation before parliament will stop increased competition in lotteries, hurting small businesses.

“It will create a monolithic monopoly in Australia, which is not in the interest of small business,” Mr Booth said.

Lottoland and newsagents are in negotiations to strike a revenue-sharing deal, with the gambling company offering a 12 per cent cut of sales.

Even if Lottoland is effectively wiped out in Australia, Mr Brill said the company would still honour its three-year sponsorship deal with NRL club Manly.

You beauty! Manly must have signed them up on a Mr Plod-type deal: even if you can no longer work in Australia you still have to pay us out in full for three years.
At least we've learned a lesson from the worst recruitment deal in Manly history . . . with the possible exception of DEC's mega win.

Council better make sure they dont hold any raffles, lucky door prizes or melbourne cup sweeps then eh ?
Better make sure none of those degenerate gambling grannys use council property to hold their evil bingo binges for hours at a time....better stick to makin sure garbage night goes smoothly and develpoments plans are fkin transparent...oh and declare vested interests.

The government says it acted in response to community concern....

Which means a semi powerful group (newsagents) threatened to galvanise and take like 5 votes away from the govt which they can't afford to lose.

I doubt if 'the community' has expressed such concerns: Puppy mills, live stock export, barrier reef, general environment, tax cuts for ge, house prices, rent prices, why milkshakes don't come in those aluminium big cups anymore, I fish and I vote, petrol prices, brookvale, one banana, two banana, three banana, four. Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more, and my mum got scared. She said, "You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air."

So the legislation banning Lottoland has passed and they will effectively close in 6 months

How long did they sign up as sponsors for ? as we may not get much joy from them after this season - speaking of joy I wonder what CocoJoy are up to these days. LOL, we've had a good run with sponsors of late. Wonder if anyone still has Kaspersky's number

As far as I'm aware the group have confirmed that the agreed length of sponsorship will be completely honoured, so fingers crossed it won't have any monetary influence on the relationship moving into next season.

Who gets the sponsorship money from Lottoland? The oval is owned by the Council. Wouldn't the Council receive the money for that hideous green sign at the southern end, and the ignominy of having to call Brookie 'Lottoland'?
